Bordered on one side by an unbroken band of swaying coconut palms and on the other by the Indian Ocean’s turquoise waters, Michamvi’s beaches are the firm focus of this paradisiacal peninsula. From its rugged tip, where you can view sunrise over the Indian Ocean and sunset over Chwaka Bay’s glassy waters, its spectacular shoreline runs south as a continuation of the East Coast’s palm-fringed coast. As on all of Zanzibar’s East Coast, the beach slopes very little. Consequently, when the tide is out, the water retreats a long way, pausing swimming from the shore but allowing for unique inter-tidal exploration along the exposed reef.

Michamvi Sunset Bay has created a space for guests to chill out – reading a favourite book or enjoying a cocktail. When you’ve had enough of the sun, this is the ideal spot to put your feet up. The hotel has 10 first floor and 10 ground floor rooms. Downstairs rooms have their own little garden and upstairs rooms have a private balcony. Rooms are laid out with total relaxation in mind. The king size beds are huge and dressed with breathable cotton sheets and blankets to give you the ultimate night’s sleep and mosquito netting, that is set away from the bed.

For many of our guests, lounging about, lazily sipping cocktails from the bar, a mere 10 metres from the sea, is their idea of the perfect holiday. However, a selection of organised tours, free and paid-for options is also available for the more adventurous. Michamvi Sunset Bay has two restaurants. The Sea Breeze restaurant, where breakfast and lunch are served, is located directly on the beach overlooking Chwaka Bay and the Garden restaurant, where dinner is sometimes served. There is evening entertainment occasionally and the tables are set up around the pool or on the beach or in one of the restaurants.
