In the Xitsonga language, the word “Makumu” refers to an intangible explanation of an open space, an uncluttered lookout over distant horizons, or endless views. The breathtaking views and location of the lodge complement a deeply inspiring sense of space and place, leaving visitors rejuvenated with the ancient spirit of African wilderness.

With the conservation of the natural fauna and flora in mind, the move to join together was with the intention of preserving the integrity of this majestic portion of the South African Lowveld. Now, over 50 years since that momentous year, the KPNR is an extension of the Kruger National Park and the transboundary Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. It is part of a greater, free-flowing ecosystem that conserves biodiversity, protects endangered species, and supports the sustainable future of local communities.

Makumu Private Game Lodge is situated on a hill, providing an elevated position and uninterrupted views over the bushveld landscape. Six luxurious and beautifully appointed suites, accommodating a maximum of twelve guests, ensure an exclusive blend of absolute comfort, style and privacy. Inspired by the tribes of Africa, each suite is decorated with a unique character. Of the six suites, three are King Suites and three are Impi Suites. Each set of a King and an Impi Suite is designed according to one of three African tribes – the Bushman, Ndebele and Zulu tribes of South Africa.

A fresh footprint in the dust, the faint sound of a breaking branch, wet mud rubbed on a tree, the presence of birds or a sudden quiet in the air are all part of the tracking experience. The senses are heightened searching for clues, sounds or smell to indicate an animal is nearby.
