Set in the pristine Southern Karoo against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, Aquila Private Game Reserve offers an exciting taste of real Africa, just two hours’ from Cape Town. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5 – offering safari’s in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback. Dining takes place buffet style, where the chef presents a rich variety of authentic South African cuisine, together with a superb South African wine list. After dinner, gather around the telescope and be taken on a journey of the southern skies. Aquila welcomes children, providing activities to keep them entertained in the children’s play area.

Discover the magic of the reemerging Karoo town, Touws River. Once know as Montague Roads and before that Daos ab, this little town might have been somewhat forgotten, but is far from gone. As the first town of the Karoo, coming from the Cape, it is known as the “Gateway to the Karoo” and driving the other direction: “Gateway to the Boland”.

Decorated in an African style with wooden furniture, each unit at Aquila features an outdoor shower and is equipped with a fan and a minibar that can be stocked on request. Some units offer a private patio/balcony offering views of the reserve. Guests staying 2 nights or more receive complimentary access to the spa, which boasts an indoor heated pool, a sauna, steam room and 12 treatment rooms. The property also features a library, curio shop and children’s entertainment area.

Meals are included at Aquila, which features a triple-volume buffet restaurant with an upstairs viewing area boasting scenic views of the Karoo mountains. There is also a pool bar and cigar lounge available for drinks and snacks. Home to the ‘Big 5’ wildlife species, guests can enjoy scheduled morning and afternoon safari game drives within an open 4 x 4 safari vehicle, which are included in the rate. Horse-back and quad-bike safaris can also be arranged.
