Set in the only exclusive-use area of Rwanda’s triumphant Akagera National Park, Magashi is an airy and spacious tented camp on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga – home to one of Africa’s highest densities of hippo.

Akagera National Park

Magashi’s home is 6 000 exclusive-use hectares of Akagera National Park. Located in the country’s north-east, Akagera was devastated by the 1994 genocide and its aftermath, with a rise in poaching and returnees settling with their cattle on park land. Over the last ten years, the park has been significantly rehabilitated and today offers one of the most thrilling safari experiences in Africa.

Approaching by boat, you soon ease into the camp’s intimate, relaxed atmosphere Stay in one of six sophisticated tented rooms on the shore of Lake Rwanyakazinga, each intricately decorated according to local Rwandan tradition. Earthy tones with hints of pink prevail, as does genuine Rwandan hospitality. Magashi’s warm and welcoming staff love sharing their traditional Kugisha supper with guests, accompanied by cattle-herding songs and stories.

Stepping out onto the camp’s viewing deck, witness nearly 500 bird species or head out into the bush with expert guides on a walking safari. Venture through the wilderness on a series of day and night game drives where you’ll be enthralled by black rhino, hippos, crocodiles and recently introduced lions. Opt to fish in the lake or traverse across the waters by boat. Back at the camp, you are invited to lounge next to the pool, taking in all the sounds of nature.
